Shelter Home "Shree Swami Vivekanand"

According to a survey conducted by Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), there are 800 to 850 homeless citizens in the city. With nowhere to live and no one to care for them, such people are forced to live on the streets under flyovers or at traffic signals and have to beg for a living. Shri Ramakrishna Arogya Sansthan has taken the initiative to bring them into the mainstream of society. Our organization has been entrusted by the NMC with day-to-day management of Swami Vivekanand Beghar Niwara Sevashram at Tapovan, Nashik City. Prior to this, such homeless citizens were living in a municipal school adjacent to The Sant Gadge Maharaj Dharmashala along the Godavari River. However, we realized that facilities at the location were inadequate and facing frequent problems due to flooding during the rainy season. Therefore, we shifted to our present shelter at Tapovan. Most of these people are elders and senior citizens who have either been abandoned by their families or do not have any in the first place. Almost all of them suffer from some physical or mental ailments resulting from old age and from living a life of neglect on the streets – cataracts, hearing loss, dementia, depression, diabetes, osteoarthritis etc. At this shelter home, we provide adequate food, clothing and shelter to homeless people. Once these basic needs are taken care of, we also facilitate medical assistance in the form of regular health check-ups, medication, surgeries and counselling. They are also provided gainful employment and their earnings are deposited in their bank accounts so that they do not have to remain dependent on anyone for their future financial needs.
